I... don't think I agree with this tutorial. It seems to be more about "I am going to teach you how to be a popular cosplayer" vs. "how to make your first cosplay." I agree with doing something within your skill level, but not to choose a character that's popular because that seems like attention seeking and honestly, doing cosplay for the wrong reasons because it's not about that.

I feel bad in saying this, but I don't believe this tutorial is helpful for the purpose stated.

I didn't say you HAVE TO cosplay a popular character. I just use these characters to illustrate my tutorial. I want my tutorial to be the most understandable by everybody. Yes, I could choose an unknown character, but in my mind it's not the best way to explain. Easiest examples are the best, I think.

Perhaps.. the wording had been wrong on both parts. I didn't mean for it to come off as you were saying you have to cosplay a popular character. It just seems that was the intent of the tutorial when I read through it. But I understand your reasoning.
